Getting Started

01

Import a book

Tap IMPORT in the library screen and pick an EPUB, TXT, or Markdown (.md) file from your Files app or iCloud Drive. The book will appear in your library instantly.

02

Tap your book to open it

From the library, tap any book to jump straight to your last reading position. The first time you open a book it starts from the beginning.

03

Tap to start reading

Once in the reader, tap anywhere to begin. Words appear one at a time at your chosen speed. Tap again to pause. Everything else — speed, context, navigation — is a swipe or long press away.

04

Complete the interactive tutorial

On first launch, FlowRead walks you through all gestures using an excerpt from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. You must perform each real gesture to advance — not just watch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What file formats are supported?
FlowRead supports EPUB, plain text (.txt), and Markdown (.md) files. PDF is not supported. If you have a PDF, try converting it to EPUB using a tool like Calibre first.
Where is my reading progress saved?
On your device only. Progress is saved automatically whenever you pause or leave the reader. The last opened book launches automatically next time you open the app.
Can I change the reading speed?
Yes. Swipe up to increase your WPM, swipe down to decrease it. The current WPM is shown briefly after each adjustment and fades automatically. You can also set a default WPM in Settings (adjustable in 50 WPM steps, range 60–1000 WPM).
What is WPM?
Words Per Minute — how many words the app shows each minute. Most people read comfortably between 200–400 WPM. FlowRead supports 60–1000 WPM. Speed is adjusted in 10 WPM increments during a reading session.
What does "ORP" mean in the Word Highlight setting?
Optimal Recognition Point — the letter in a word that your brain uses to identify it fastest. When set to Letter, only that center letter is highlighted in your accent color. This gives your eye a fixed anchor point, reducing the effort needed to process each word. It's the default and recommended setting.
The app is stuck in landscape — can I rotate it?
FlowRead is designed exclusively for landscape orientation — this is intentional. Landscape gives more horizontal reading space and keeps your eye focused on a single vertical band. Portrait mode is not supported.
How do I open the navigation menu?
Long press anywhere on the reading screen while reading is paused. The menu lets you jump to a specific chapter, go back to the library, or access settings.
How do I get back to my library?
Long press to open the menu (reading must be paused), then tap LIBRARY.
Does the app require an internet connection?
No. FlowRead is fully offline. No account is needed and no network connection is ever used. Everything — books, progress, settings — lives on your device.
My book isn't importing — what should I try?
  • Make sure the file is an EPUB, TXT, or MD file — PDF is not supported.
  • Large EPUB files may take a few seconds to process; wait for the spinner to complete.
  • If the EPUB is DRM-protected (e.g. from Kindle or Apple Books), it cannot be imported — DRM prevents third-party apps from reading the file content.
  • Try exporting or re-saving the file from a different app, then importing again.
  • If the issue persists, email us with the file size and source app.
Can I use accessibility fonts?
Yes. Go to Settings → Appearance → Font and choose Atkinson Hyperlegible (designed for low-vision readers) or Lexend (designed to reduce visual stress for dyslexic readers). Both fonts are bundled with the app — no download needed.
How do I delete a book from my library?
In the library screen, long press any book to reveal the delete option.
